This video gives some background on the weatherunder ground group and it shows an interview with Bill Ayers done by Connie Chung in 1998. This interview took place after Barack Obama and Ayers began associating with each other. They continued to serve on boards and associate with each other long after the interview. There is no way that Obama doesn't know about Ayers past as he claimed at that time.
As someone who is familiar with politics I can safely say that you don't hold your very first political meeting/fundraiser in a strangers house. You do those kind of kickoff events are a trusted friends home.
